collage paintings on canvas
This series represents the process of motherhood for me personally. Before my son was born, I found myself drawn to images of creatures that could be seen as protective spirits. In particular, I was inspired by images of traditional Indonesian masks, as well as Chinese dragon dances. I painted fabric, and collaged together craft papers, media which might be regarded as “feminine” materials. Certain animals, especially foxes, found their way into my imagery. It was as if I was trying to somehow discover my son’s personality through the collection of images that I was drawn to. After he was born, I collaged together more elements, including the cartoon characters that he watched as a toddler, and painted his icon like portrait in the center; as if a Patron Saint of Divine Chaos.
